The Starborn Smart-Bit Deck Screw Depth Setter is a clutch tool that chucks into a standard drill and drives every screw on a job to the exact same depth — flush with the board or set slightly below it, consistently, screw after screw. It's compatible with a wide range of Starborn fasteners including Deckfast Epoxy, Deckfast Stainless, Headcote, Cap-Tor XD, and Deckfast Metal screws, and works well with many other fastener products beyond Starborn's own line, making it a general-purpose depth-setting solution for deck and general woodworking fastening.
An Auto-Stop mechanism releases with an audible pop once the tool reaches its set depth, disengaging the driver bit so it stops turning in the screw recess instead of camming out and stripping it. Depth is set once by threading a knurled locking ring against the depth ring, and that setting holds through an entire deck — adjusting for a different screw length takes only seconds. A free-spinning stop collar with a rubber O-ring rides against the board surface without dragging or marking it. Built from stainless steel rather than plated steel, the tool takes any standard 1" insert bit and comes with five: one T-20 pre-installed in the tool, plus two additional T-20 bits, one T-25, and one #2 Phillips. Note: not for use with square-drive (Robertson) screws — Starborn cautions the bit can grip in the recess and pull free of the tool when the clutch releases. Use with a standard drill or driver, not an impact driver.
