Formerly Excelsior Lumber Company, this location did not originate as a lumber company when established in 1880 by Benjamin B. Demarest. Positioned by the Pequannock River, the lumber yard produced all types of premium excelsior engineered lumber—a material used exclusively in mattresses—from poplar, spruce, basswood, butternut, willow, and white pine cone. In 1912, the millwork company was incorporated as the North Jersey Excelsior Company.
Seven years after the mill unfortunately burned in 1915, Leo Lust bought the millwork land, creating the Excelsior Lumber Company on the site. Around the same time, Lust expanded to include a mill and shop to provide building products for the community.
In 1971, Excelsior Lumber Company was sold to Gerry Meany, who oversaw the operation, including a mill, hardware store, and lumberyard, for more than 45 years. Near the close of the 80s, the lumber company changed hands to Bob Kaslander Sr. and his son, Bob Kaslander Jr. The organization was shaped into what we now know as Excelsior Lumber Company, offering premier building supplies to Newark NJ, and the greater Jersey area.
Excelsior Lumber Company became one of the state's leading lumber yards, hardware stores, and outdoor living centers in the NJ Newark area! In 2004, the site expanded to include a successful kitchen and bath design showroom to better provide building products and supplies and inspire homeowners across the state.
In 2023, the location was acquired by The Deck Store and continues to serve the local community by providing top-of-the-line building materials, decking, and competitive pricing.
